Exmoor’s Marilyns

Today was the years big walk, and one we had been talking about for some time, since doing the Wivey Way last year. Due to other commitments, and some lack of training, we’d put it off till the last possible moment, but fortunately the weather held out and we were blessed with perfect walking weather.

Kate, Caroline, Mel and I set out from Porlock and headed up Bossington Hill and onwards to Selworthy Beacon to bag our first Marilyn of the day (Marilyn’s are the English equivalent of the Scottish Munro).

Down off Selworthy and James was on hand to provide a most excellent brunch, which refuelled us well for the climb up Periton Hill to bag number 2.

After descending to Wootton Courtenay we then faced the long, slow and hot climb up onto Dunkery Beacon. The climb broken by James and Paul again on hand with a cream tea – definitely doing it in style!

With number three in the bag, all that was left was to descend back to Porlock, and then the short drive to Dunster to enjoy supper at the Luttrell Arms. Perfect!

16 miles and 4000ft of climb, and a job well done.
