Having made the decision to come all the way back, it was interesting passing by the spot I had stayed at last night, and those I’d sussed out as possibles for the return, each one further committing me to making it back or face the prospect of a scramble in the undergrowth trying to find an acceptable pitch in this Martian landscape of Spain.

The sun soon slipped over the horizon leaving me to switch on the lights and hope that their penetration through the blackness at least matched my velocity over the ground. Fortunately I’d brought the head torch as well, and combined with the front light I had good visibility for rocks, holes and the frequent marker posts in the middle of the track that indicated some sort of crossing track or road.

This was all pretty good until I got near Barracas and the fog descended, cutting visibility to about 20 metres. Oh well, just makes for a little more excitement I thought, let’s plough on regardless. For the most part this was fine, I just needed to keep my wits about me for those posts in the middle of the track. Pollaxing one of those at 20mph would turned me into an Exocet missile! Fortunately this being Spain, the French Navy were nowhere to be seen and I was saved that particular fate.

Finally got back to base at 8pm having covered 115 miles today (a personal best). Plus the 50 from yesterday on the uphill run. Not bad for a mountain bike pulling 20kgs in the trailer!
