This worked like a charm. Connected to my toshiba immediately. Prior to this, the light would not flash in order to pair. It would just light up continuously for a few seconds and then turn off.
Thanks, holding down the power button was what worked. Appreciate you taking your time to document this.
EXCELLENT! Thanks so much Joe.
A have a model A1314 (two batteries, threaded steel battery door) that I’m trying to pair with a 2020 iMac. I’ve had the most luck holding the power button, putting in the batteries, clicking on connecting in Bluetooth preferences, then releasing the power button.
What happens next is odd: The numbers for the pairing sequence type themselves. Without my touching the keyboard, each number of the six is filled in about every 5 seconds (as evidenced by the cursor moving through the sequence of six). The window then disappears, and the status of the pairing says Connection failed. I’ve tried on 3 different macs, with no luck. Thoughts?
This was SO helpful … years after you posted. I had tried and tried but your simple instruction to not let go of the power button was PURE GOLD. Thank you for making my life better!
It worked! Thank you!
Thank you, Dave.
Typing this note from a keyboard I could not get to work until I found your post!

Excellent, holding down the power button worked perfectly! Appreciate you taking your time to document this. Many Thanks
The LED on my magic keyboard was flashing and it would say “found†but wouldn’t connect. I kept scrolling and you suggested switching the batteries, so after doing what I did before four more times I rolled my eyes and changed the batteries, held down the power button and voila.
Thank you so much!!!
Nice, the primary instructions did the trick! I was close on my own… but didn’t catch holding down power while going into the Bluetooth settings. Thanks!!
Thank you for this! I was getting worried my wireless mouse and keyboard had died but your reset device list instructions at the end got them both reconnected again. What a relief!
Thank you! I was going crazy trying to figure out the solution for why I couldn’t pair my old mac keyboard to my laptop. This did the trick.
Thanks a lot …. I was trying for days for my 2011 bluetooth keyboard !
Why can’t they write it so clear on Apple Support ? 🙁
I have been trying all kinds of ways to connect my keyboard. Your advice to hold down the power button through the entire process worked for me! Thanks so much.
Thank you!!!! OMG, I’ve been trying to connect my mac keyboard to my mac computer for weeks!! This was super helpful. Better than any office mac page! Thank you.

Thank you. Holding down the power button on the keyboard while running the bluetooth connection setup worked like a charm.
THANK you. Your trick finally worked for me (holding down the power button). I spend a lot of time on this.
The reconnecting keyboard instruction really worked. I was restarting my Mac several times but it didn’t fix the keyboard connection. Thanks for the instructions.
Hi I am using a Logitech wireless keyboard which I don’t like. My son bought me a magic keyboard for my iMac. Only some of the keys are working. He bought me another one and it arrived this morning. Again only some of the keys are working. I’m now thinking it’s the iMac but the Logitech is working perfectly. Help!!!! Please!
