SWCP – Appledore to Buck’s Mills

After the rest and small shortcut of yesterday, the next planned stopover at Westward Ho! is closer than expected, and the one after, Clovelly, is within reach today.

Westward Ho! is only about 2 miles from the campsite a the proverbial crow flies, but we opt to retrace our steps to Appledore and follow the coast path around the headland of Northam Burrows, home to a golf course. There is a strong wind but the sun is also out by then, so it’s a pleasant walk, punctuated by the exclamation mark of Westward Ho!

We stop into the Sunshine Cafe, a greasy spoon if ever there was one. The manager is slightly taken aback as I explain the concept to the Germans, but I make light of it think I avoid having the food spat in. We come here, as recommended by the campsite owner, for a proper Full English, another first for my new friends and walking partners. They like it, even if the formula is a little tired around these parts, but you can’t really argue with a plate full of food for £3.45. Should you be extra peckish, they do a double portion for £6.45.

Fueled up and resupplied at the Coop, we continue on. By Peppercombe we are running out of steam so we think of wild camping, but notice there is a pub at Horn’s Cross just off the route, plus a campsite a couple of miles up the road.

We head for the Coach and Horses, enjoy a late afternoon pint, then struggle to summon the energy for the last leg, but finally crawl up the hill into the site around 6:30.
